Food is essential to human life and concern for food safety is a prominent issue to this day. In addition, changing habits, with increasing demand for quick and simple meals, have contributed to the growth of the pre-cooked, pre-prepared or ready-to-eat food industry with high quality standards. To meet the growing demands of the consumer and the competitiveness in the agri-food sector, companies have evolved to the concept of Industry 4.0, in which production processes and the food supply chain are monitored more efficiently using partially or fully automated production processes. This step involves not only the transition from the company’s document system to digital, but also the interaction of interfaces, processes, data and management. Some of the systems that integrate this technology and complement each other are the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and the Manufacturing Execution System (MES). Several companies have emerged on the market with innovative proposals to meet the growing demand in this area. In relation to ERP's, there are several software developed to optimize the use of resources at a company level, of which Eticadata is an example. FoodInTech is a Portuguese company that recently developed Flow Manufacturing (Flow M) software, a MES system, which aims to assist companies in this task. Bearing this in mind and translating this reality into day-to-day practice, the work carried out during the internship consisted of both managing a project to implement the Flow M software in the company Rissolaria Tradicional, as well as monitoring its applicability in other companies at national level, also considering the integration of Flow M with the ERP Eticadata. Thus, from February to July 2023, I had the opportunity to learn about how FoodInTech and Rissolaria Tradicional operate, understand the specifics of the Flow M software, identify the client's needs and requirements, and follow the procedures necessary for its parameterization, implementation and validation. I also had the opportunity to reflect on the real impact of the digital transformation on Rissolaria Tradicional and other companies, resulting in better efficiency, productivity and competitiveness. This internship was indeed an enriching experience, which allowed me to know better the food industry, particularly the pre-cooked food sector.
