Abstract

The reasons why companies fail and don’t be able to follow a normal course of growth are immense. However, cash management and it’s cash-flow problems are undoubtedly one of those reasons. As such, to overcome the liquidity problems that exist in companies, it is necessary to carry out a correct analysis of the financial instruments at their disposal and also to manage correctly the short-term liquidity they have in order to meet their financial commitments in the short term. At the time that the city of Porto becomes a destination of choice and reference at European level, this work examines a case study of special importance for the city, Douro Azul - Sociedade Marítimo-Turística, SA. The theme of this work is the cash management and the annual budget and its objective is to analyze the subject applied to the referred company, in order to determine whether or not it is capable of elaborating an action plan that allows it to generate sufficient cash to maintain a healthy operating activity. For that, a set of action techniques in the sphere of short-term financial management is also identified. Through this work it was possible to verify that the factor of seasonality has a great impact on the sales of the company and consequently in its treasury, which indicates that making a good management of the working capital is even more fundamental for the life of the companies. It was also verified that this company has the capacity to generate liquidity through its operational activity. However, it is evident that for a considerable investment the company needs to require external capital – mainly via debt – in order to finance itself.
