Abstract

This report intends to be an act of reflection about the professional path of a teacher who shares her personal experience and learnings and questions them by reconstituting her professional journey and reflecting on the most striking moments of her path, centering herself in the evolution of the Portuguese educational system and the changes as far as school management boards are concerned. The way she perceives her job compulsorily takes up an evolving form that is marked by the experiences she lived throughout her professional path and allow her to find herself again and redefine her professional identity. Thus, the first chapter of the report takes the form of an exercise of personal and professional introspection, an inner journey that allows her to recall former experiences and revive blurred memories, confronting her present “self” with all the changes perceived along her path and questioning them. The dimension of the questioning is expressed in the second chapter, with a contextualization of the problem under study, which deals with the functions of the school headmaster and the discussion about the legislation that rules them and the image of school as organization. In chapters three and four, a reflection is made about the importance school has been taking as organization in result of the evolution of society and school system in Portugal, more specifically, democratic management. Revisiting this evolution means reorganizing ideas and concepts that have been consolidating in guidelines for action and in organizational action and deepening and consolidating the knowledge of school as a place where teachers work and professionally evolve. It also means redoing the laces of professional life entangled, as shown in chapter five, with the analysis of collective experience and the teachings taken from it for personal life and professional work.
