Abstract

Intercultural management and organizational culture: the case study of Volkswagen Bank in Portugal The globalization and consequent development of technologies have accentuated the possibility of displacement of companies and people. In the globalized world, the multinationals have become part of the local business panorama and the teams are, in many cases, made of not only local individuals but also of other colleagues who come from different countries. For that reason, language, culture and intercultural communication have become more relevant because there is the need to standardize practices between the headquarters of a company and the its subsidiaries but also because it is necessary to consider the possible cultural differences between the original culture of the company and the cultures of the countries a company is establishing subsidiaries in. Following an internship experience at Volkswagen Bank in Portugal, the main goal of this work is trying to understand how to characterize the cultural and organizational dynamics of a multinational company. In this specific case, the aim is to identify the major cultural differences between the Portuguese and the German cultures and how those cultural differences contribute or modify the organizational culture and the working environment in a multinational company like Volkswagen Bank.
