Periodontal disease is a disease with high prevalence in the world, so it´s diagnosis and prevention have become essential for the maintenance of periodontal health status and ultimately to prevent tooth loss. The origin of the development of gingivitis to periodontitis is a phenomenon that has not yet reached consensus and it is not possible to predict disease progression. The glyco-OralOme of periodontal disease includes the set of glycosylated human proteins existing in the oral cavity associated with periodontal disease. The present study aims to elucidate the molecular mechanisms and respective signaling pathways that are compromised in this disease through the identification of proteins involved in the initiation of periodontal disease. The study of the salivary proteome of periodontal disease allowed the identification of two important proteins that can explain the evolution of the disease, and are altered with increased regulation. One is zinc-alpha 2- glicoprotein (P25311), a glycoprotein that is considered a tumor-associated obesity biomarker. Its downregulation by TNF - alpha and decreased amount of expression in chronic periodontitis (-8,5) and significant increase in aggressive periodontitis (2,2) can make it a marker for periodontal disease to consider. The other protein potentially involved in periodontitis is prostaglandin E synthase (O14864), exclusive of chronic periodontitis, whose production is controlled by TNF-alpha and once stimulated by COX-2, it induces the production of PGE2 . The obtained results prove the potential of in silico studies allowing, from the salivary proteome analysis, establish new targets for future experimental studies and identification of potential biomarkers salivary aiming at therapy intervention or medical diagnosis of periodontal disease.
