Abstract

The present document consists of a final internship report, developed within the scope of the Master's in Nursing with Specialization in Community Health Nursing and Public Health at the Portuguese Catholic University, operationalized in a Community Care Unit of a Health Center Group in Greater Porto. Its writing aims to highlight the student's acquisition of skills throughout the entire journey. It is the responsibility of the Specialist Nurse in Community Health Nursing and Public Health to identify the health needs of individuals, families, groups, or communities, to plan and develop nursing interventions in their area of expertise, following a health planning logic that ensures efficient use of available resources to achieve objectives, reducing health problems considered priorities. The phenomenon addressed throughout the internship and reported in this document focuses on the sleep and rest habits of children attending the first cycle of basic education, as it is the subject of action by the nursing team of the functional unit. A community intervention project was developed, based on the Health Planning methodology, and three questionnaires were used as data collection methods, namely the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire, the Sleep Self Report, and an instrument constructed for this purpose. After their application and statistical analysis of the results, three problems were identified, with the most prominent being "Compromised sleep habits". Considering this diagnosis, objectives, respective indicators, and strategies were defined. Health promotion aimed at developing healthy adults should begin in childhood, at a stage when each individual's self-care habits are developing. In this logic, schools play an important role in promoting healthy habits, being optimal spaces to identify, develop, and implement strategies that encourage the adoption of healthy sleep habits. This internship allowed for the development of necessary skills for practicing as a Specialist Nurse in Community Health Nursing and Public Health as well as the development of academic skills to obtain a Master's degree in Nursing.
