Introduction: During childhood, children can adopt non-nutritive habits that, in the long run, may result in the development of malocclusions, such as open bite and crossbite. Aim: Evaluate the current or previous existence of non-nutritive sucking habits in children 0-6 years, duration and intensity of the same; Identify predisposal factors for pacifier use; examine if respondents’ qualifications and place of residence are related to the attitudes and prejudgment that they have to the use of the pacifier; verify the type of malocclusion with higher incidence in the study group; Material and methods: An epidemiologic observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out, and a convenience sample was drawn, in which the largest possible number of children from up to 6 years old were obtained, attending the USF Rio Dão, Santa Comba Dão - Viseu, between Oct’ 016 and Feb’ 017. Data were collected by applying a survey to the each child’s responsible and an intra-oral and pacifier photographic record was made, if a child was carrying the pacifier and/or presented some type of vertical / transverse alteration. Results / Conclusions: The sample consisted of 111 children, of whom 77.5% use/used a pacifier, more than half of which kept the habit for more than 2 years. The pacifier’s use occurs mainly in situations of stress / crying and to induce sleep. Only 17.0% of the children had finger sucking, 14.4% suctioned in the tongue, 13.5% sucked lip. Adults who reside in a village and / or have less literacy tend to have incorrect prejudgments and to take inappropriate actions regarding the factors inherent of pacifier use. The environment in which the child is inserted and the time that was breastfed have been shown to be significantly related to the fact that the child uses pacifiers. The anterior open bite was the malocclusion with higher incidence in the study group.
