Abstract

According to Carvalho (2013), the Portuguese society demographic profile has changed, tending towards an inverted pyramid. Life expectancy has been progressively increasing, which must be seen not only as a challenge but also as an opportunity. Portuguese parents spend little time with their children, fathers and mothers, since they have to work in order to ensure the family income. On one hand, this permanent absence does not allow a proper care for the elderly. On the other hand, children are placed too early in kindergartens, which causes a deficit in socializing with their parents and grandparents. Portuguese seniors are among European seniors with lowest income. Being so, they do not have the monetary possibilities to pay for a retirement home that assures them quality of living, dignity and familiarity. Considering this reality, the recreational and sports association of Vila Chã de Sá, a small municipality of Viseu, intends to build a nursing home and a kindergarten, to address the mentioned needs, thereby promoting affection between children and grandparents. Our aim is to collaborate with the aforementioned institution, by designing a home for the elderly and a kindergarten. The theoretical investigation was based on demographic analysis, the concept of accessibility, the employability potential generated by this age group and the identification of the target population.
