Abstract

The Historic Center is an icon of the city of Viseu that has been losing residents and increasing the state of disrepair of it’s buildings. This area is occupied by buildings in which, even with some features in common, there are obvious the differences of existing eras and styles. Currently, it is inhabited specially by aging population, creating a dichotomy between the small number of people that wanders it during the day and the young people who attend it for nightlife. Given this reality, this final proof consist in the rehabilitation of a building to house the program of collective housing for young people. The building, number 92 in Rua do Comércio, in the Historic Center of Viseu, dates from the late nineteenth century and has some peculiarities that makes it attractive for the development of this residence for students, that also provides lodging for young people who attend to university education. With this proposal it is also aimed, through the role of architecture, to create a greater intergenerational cohesion and allow worthy housing for the students who are attending the universities nearby. It is aimed a coherent intervention, in order to fulfill the general concepts of conservation and keeping in mind the concept of rehabilitation.
