Abstract

This final project aims to report theoretical and practical perspectives as to convey all the process of analysis, of research and meditation of the project practical component, developed at the current school year, at the Portuguese Catholic University (Universidade Católica Portuguesa), for the degree of the Architecture Master. The theoretical investigation focuses on the theme “The Multifamily Housing in the Dynamic of Elder – Universal Design”, a central theme to consider when designing housing for seniors, a population layer notoriously more vulnerable that with the passing (years) of time tends to lose skills, strength, dexterity and agility, requiring thus accessible housing, destitute of barriers and endowed of an universal design that allows them to get old in public and private spaces , promoting thereby an active aging. The practical case study involves the achievement of a project that consists in developing a proposal in the urban city of Viseu. We were offered a place in this city, so we opted for one located in the parish of Santa Maria. In our urban proposal, we intend to build multifamily housing based on an inclusive design and accessible to all sections of the population, particularly for seniors. There are dissimilar ways to grow old and be old, making it essential to rethink old age in order to highlight their virtues, aptitudes and characteristics in order to promote a healthy longevity in the elderly. Nowadays, with the technological development achieved in the health area, there is the possibility of mitigating the effects of aging through prevention techniques and better lifestyles in order to be able to live an active aging and detain life quality in old age, in the public space as in the private space.
