Abstract

This report comes within the scope of the Master's Degree in Nursing with Specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing in the area of Nursing for the Person in Critical Situation. It intends to demonstrate in a critical and reflective way the experiences lived and the skills acquired along the course carried out within the scope of the Curricular Unit Final Internship and Report. The first training experience took place in the Coordinating Office for Collection and Transplantation and the second in the Emergency and Resuscitation Medical Vehicle, at a Hospital Center in Lisbon. These internship contexts provided a wide range of situations, experiences and learning in the area of critically ill people and organ donation. Organ transplantation is, in certain clinical situations, the only therapy that improves quality of life or even saves lives. But for transplantation to occur, there must be donation, so that the shortage of organs for transplantation can be overcome. The nurse, due to the proximity in providing care to the person in a critical situation and/or organ failure, occupies a privileged position and plays a crucial role in identifying potential donors, this being the starting point for transplantation, and probably the most important part of the process. One of the ways to ensure that potential donors are not lost is to have professionals who are aware and trained, acting in accordance with approved protocols and ethical rules. To this end, they must be aware of this condition and develop specific knowledge and skills related to specialized nursing care in identifying potential organ donors of people with brain death. To support practice based on evidence and develop master's skills, a literature review was carried out entitled “Specialized nursing care in identifying potential organ donors of people with brain death – scoping review”. I supported the care provided in the theory of transitions by Afaf Ibrahim Meleis, and I sought to reach the degree of expert, taking into account the theoretical model of acquisition of skills by Patrícia Benner.
