Modality as a complex, multifaceted and powerful discoursal concept, though present in Portuguese EFL programs and textbooks, is delimited to the mere presentation and study of modal verbs in restraint contexts and, thus, fails to be explored as an important instrument of discourse. The aim of this dissertation is to demonstrate the strong correlation between modality and personal point of view. It also argues for the language awareness approach as a valuable tool on the way to the discovery and investigation of the concept of modality as a wider representation of personal perspective on our view of the world.
