Abstract

The following Phd dissertation aims at studying Theophanes the Confessor´s Chronography, an essencial work for the study of the VIII and IX Eastern Christian centuries. The main goal of analysis focuses in the relations between Empire and Church during the Controversy over Images. One intends on studying how Iconoclasm simultaneously influenced and was influenced by the relations between the imperial sphere, the ecclesiastical hierarchy, the monastic milieu and the popular religious beliefs of the time. For such a purpose, it is pursued, in the first part, an historical analysis of the iconoclastic period (cc. 730-843) by studying the main actors involved and the issues typical of the Eastern Roman Empire. In the second part, we devot ourselves to the theological and cultural causation of Iconoclasm proper, trying to distinguish internal an external factors in order to explain its acute appearance in this time. The main tools for the study of the phenomenon are the theological christology, the changes on the Caliphate and eschatological expectations. Lastly, in the third part of the thesis, philological problems typical of Theophanes´ Chronography are accessed before proceeding to an analysis of the work itself. We also submit, as an appendix, a translation of the Chronography.
