Abstract

The global crisis caused by COVID-19 has drastically changed the way companies and consumers behave as a society, as consumers were forced to re-evaluate the way they live, communicate and consume. The objective of this study is to identify the main changes in the diet and eating habits of Portuguese families during the pandemic, more specifically in terms of the consumption of canned fish. Therefore, an analysis of the existing literature review on the subject in question was carried out and, later, its validation through an online survey (from a sample of 177 Portuguese consumers) and 6 interviews with consumers and companies of canned fish in Portugal. Finally, we can conclude that the COVID-19 crisis significantly impacted the diet of Portuguese consumers. In fact, the results show an increase on food product’s expenditure, a higher preference for the physical purchase channel over the online, as well as the emergence of a new consumer profile, the foodie. In addition, there was an increase in the number of meals prepared at home and an increase on demand for take-away and home delivery services. With regard to the consumption of canned fish, given its importance in the national gastronomic culture, we can observe that its consumption remained relatively stable when compared to the pre-pandemic period.
