Abstract

This qualitative study aimed to understand the perception of parents with oncologic disease history, to the impact of this on their children, parental relationship and familiar dynamic. Therefore, five interviews were conducted (3 to female and 2 to males) with parents of children aged between 5 and 10 years, during the process of diagnosis and treatment of disease. Participants were led to reflect on the impact that their illness caused in the children of school age, as well as in their relationship and familiar dynamic, through a semi-structured interview guide. The participants’ testimony appears to show a large change in family dynamics, as well as a tendency for the existence of a greater impact the higher the development of the child, attending to the fact that older children have greater perception ability regarding the disease and its implications. However, it was found that the greatest impact focuses on the emotional domain and although this is more significant during the process of treatment of disease, has long-term consequences. As for the parental relationship, stands out the fact of some participants revealed bigger proximity and availability to follow their own children.
