Abstract

Introduction: The increased need for oral rehabilitation is related to population aging. Removable prosthodontics is common in Portugal, having a significant effect on the quality of life of patients. The success of the treatment depends on factors such as prosthetic design, type of rehabilitation and psychosocial aspects. Objectives: The study aims to determine whether the use of removable prostheses improves quality of life, considering physical, emotional and social aspects. We also seek to identify possible problems associated with its use that could harm patients' quality of life. Based on the reported difficulties, we intend to develop practical solutions to resolve or minimize these issues. Materials and methods: Cross-sectional observational study carried out with a sample of 27 patients rehabilitated with removable prostheses at the UCP University Dental Clinic. Sociodemographic data, Kennedy classification were collected and the OHIP-14, GOHAI and QSPM questionnaires were applied. All data were statistically analyzed by SPSS 28.0. Results: There was a predominance of female patients, from the geriatric group and with Kennedy Class III in both arches, except in the lower arch of patients aged 65 years or over, where Class I prevailed. The study showed a reduced impact of oral problems in patients' lives, with greater complaints of physical pain (3.92±1.08) and high prosthetic satisfaction (8.81±2.08). The only significant difference was in the chewing dimension of the Kennedy Classification for the upper arch, with a value of 8.691 (p=0.013). Overall, the impact of oral problems was limited. Conclusion: The majority of patients continue to express satisfaction regarding rehabilitation, translating into a positive perception regarding their quality of life, with minimal impact on physical, emotional and social aspects. It is noteworthy that patients reported difficulties associated with chewing capacity, particularly when chewing harder foods.
