The purpose of this work is to determine whether gender equality in access to education and participation in the labor market has implications on economic growth. Using a regression with panel data, we investigate to what extent greater gender equality contributed to economic growth, using data for Portugal, Greece, Sweden, Germany and France and analyzing an extended time period (1960-2010). This study is an update of previous studies focusing on these five specific countries. We find that the reduction of the gender gap, whether in the years of schooling or participation in the labor market, has a very positive impact on GDP growth, that is, on economic growth. In the analysis carried out, the variable of education seems to have contributed more than the variable of participation in the labor market.
