Abstract

The objective of this dissertation was to carry out an exploratory and comparative analysis of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and inflation on companies in various sectors of activity of the Portuguese economy. The method used was the exploratory case study. Four compamies located in Porto Metropolitan Area were analyzed and compared, three micro (construction, catering and textile) and one medium (canning industry). Results show a change in the margins of companies and a rapid introduction of health norms and reorganization of work in construction, textile and canning companies. The catering company had to shut down temporarily. As far as the support is concerned, the State has provided it. Micro enterprises believe that they have been sufficient. The medium enterprise complains about the amounts and delays. Inflation came about in the counter-cycle of the pandemic recovery, increased companies' costs, forced them to rethink sales prices and margins, and altered their expectations. Two response strategies are visible on the part of companies. One is not to change them, reducing unitary margins. The other is to raise selling prices, keeping unitary margins.
