Abstract

After three industrial revolutions, a fourth comes up to be named Industry 4.0. Characterized by the ability of replicating what is physical into virtual set-ups, it is able to retrieve and analyze large amounts of data in real-time. Moreover, this new production context is shaping the decision making process and organizational structures, by shortening them. Therefore, irrevocably, disruptive changes are taking place in both economic and social systems. This changes go beyond mere grasps and are going to impact deeply the workplace landscape for following years. Thus, this dissertation intends to answer the following investigation topic: “In which way does labor should re-align its competences to avoid obsolescence in the 4.0 industry context?” The methodology adopted to answer this topic is qualitative and exploratory by nature, resulting in a survey. The data sources can be split into two polls, the first: five experts placed in different industries and areas, using face-to-face interviews – a CEO, a consultant, a human resources manager, an university lecturer and a sociologist. The second: a sample of 500 individuals with ages comprised between 16 and 30 years old, to which were created and applied a questionnaire Consequently, the main conclusion of this dissertation is that workforce may develop their intrinsic capabilities, as humans, which are unique and cannot be yet copied by robôs – the so called soft-skills – to make a stand in a more technological world and surpass any possible obsolescence.
