This report describes the process of acquisition of specialized competences in Medical- Surgical Nursing. For taking care of a person in critical condition, the nurse specialized in Medical-Surgical Nursing possesses scientific, ethical, relational and technical competences which are employed in the areas of care, management, formation and investigation. This way a detailed description of the developed activities and specialized competences acquired in the clinical practice is given in two different contexts of nurse care: emergency service and the ICU of Hospital Garcia de Orta. Critical and vulnerable situations were experienced, where constant vigilance and monitoring allied by high technology resulted in the development of significant communication competences, strengthening the patient/family/nurse relation, incentivizing the management of feelings and promoting comfort and life quality. The thematic of nursing quality indicators comes as a transversal topic throughout this report due to its potential of contribution in the care quality improvement. They reflect the unique contribution of nursing care for the population’s health and measure how nurses conceive, act and evaluate their professional action and autonomous decision process. Through literature reviews, specific emergency care and intensive care nursing quality indicators were identified. Subsequently some indicators were selected according to the needs identified in the services and some implementation projects were developed which resulted in real and effective improvements in nursing quality practice and audit services
