Abstract

The theme of indiscipline has revealed itself of great relevance in the vast majority of Portuguese public schools, given that this phenomenon contributes significantly to disturb the normal course of school life and it is also an important concern of teachers, students, staff, parents and politicians, which demonstrates the dimension it has taken, especially in the last few decades. The present paper therefore, intends to promote understanding and reflection of (in)discipline in schools of the 21st century and in order to pursue this purpose, the paper is articulated in three parts. In the first it is described the professional course, which either by the various schools where the teaching process was developed either by the many positions held at the level of administrative and management, has allowed a deep knowledge of the phenomenon of school indiscipline, mainly present in the early years of the third millennium. The second part started with a brief approach of the school’s course in society seen under a historical perspective, then having carried out an analysis of the literature and the set of theoretical assumptions that allow us to have a map of concepts on the issue under review, therefore allowing us to have an overview of the many factors that may be causing the phenomenon. The third part takes the form of descriptive case study type, showing how a grouping of schools sought to evaluate the phenomenon of indiscipline within their organization and how its findings contributed to the construction of a new structure of Educational Coordination and Supervision, whose purpose was to create a program to combat indiscipline. The results of the mentioned program suggest that the enforcement of an educational strategy based on civic education allied to an accountability team work pointed towards a path of hope in the fight against indiscipline.
