Abstract

This work aims to approach the Oral Health Related Quality of Life (OHRQL) of individuals diagnosed with periodontal disease. Objective: Evaluate the OHRQL of those individuals, who attend the consultations of Dental Medicine at Universidade Católica, as well as to understand if the hygienic phase of the periodontal treatment influences the quality of life of those patients. Methods: A total of 50 individuals referred for the first time to the Periodontology department of, Universidade Católica, between the16th of April 2012 and 7th of May 2012, diagnosed with periodontal disease, except the lighter forms of it (plaque induced light gingivitis and plaque induced moderate gingivitis), completed the GOHAI questionnaire (General Oral Health Assessment Index), before any intervention by the dentist and once again 6 weeks after the patients were submitted to the hygienic phase of the periodontal treatment. Results: No statistically significant differences could be found between the average of the GOHAI questionnaire registered before the hygienic phase of the periodontal treatment (17,7) and the average of the GOHAI questionnaire registered after the hygienic phase (17,9). The type of periodontal disease that was diagnosed to the patients, involved in this study was related with the results obtained in the GOHAI (p=0,029). It was concluded that the average of the results of the GOHAI was as higher as the severity of the periodontal disease that was diagnosed increased, thus aggressive periodontitis obtained the highest (22,5), followed by advanced chronic periodontitis (20,2), by moderated chronic periodontitis (18,9), by light chronic periodontitis (15,2), and finally by advanced chronic gingivitis (13,3). As for the socio-demographic variables, gender and age, no statistically significant differences could be found between the averages of the GOHAI questionnaire registered by both male and female genders and by the different age groups.
