Abstract

Being a pathology happening at a global scale, the periodontal disease doesn't appear to limit it's noxiousness to the intra-oral environment. Accordingly, the contribution of the aforementioned condition to the development of gestational complications has been investigated, being something that in some sense inverts but doesn't oppose to the trend of the studies that, in another context, have been focusing and turning into a fact the reflexes of gestation itself in the periodontium. The premises that support the referred contribution are strong. Even so, the confirmation of their truthfulness in complications such as premature births or pre-eclampsia, would translate into a new formula for the fight against the prevalent indexes of morbimortality ensuing from them. Being universally recognised phenomena, infection and inflammation lea, under different perspectives, the mechanisms of physiopathological order proposed by the works concerned with intrinsic aspects of the still just conceivable causal link between periodontal disease and pregnancy complications. There still will be much to investigate in order to obtain more consistent results with regard to this causal nexus between the previous variables.
