Abstract

This report is an integral part of the Curricular Unit "Internship and Final Report", inherent to the "Master of Medical-Surgical Nursing: in the area of Nursing to the Critical Patient", of the Institute of Sciences of the Portuguese Catholic University - Lisbon. It aims to expose and give visibility to the skills acquired and developed in the provision of care to the Critical Patient, in the context of internship which took place in the Emergency Service and in an Intensive Care Unit, consolidating specialized competencies, proper to the Specialist Nurse. The provision of care and the development of specialized skills in an critical environment becomes a challenge, requiring not only a vast knowledge, but also a great ability to evaluate and adapt to new situations, with a safe, professional and ethical exercise. The ability to make scientific, ethical and deontological decisions is essential, requiring from the specialist nurse an effective and efficient management of the person-centered environment. In addition to all these skills, the development of the internship in this environment, also provides a multiplicity of experiences and opportunities for improvement, with a unique multidisciplinary team dynamic, where the consolidation of specialized skills is essential. Along this path, aiming the Humanization process and continuous improvement in the care of the Critical Patient, a literature review was developed, maping the knloedge about the “Influence of extended visitation policy in the outcome of intensive care patients”. Beyond the mobilization of theoretical knowledge, I developed technical, scientific and relational skills in the provision of care, with the development of critical thinking in Nursing, emphasizing along the way, the ability to reflect on the experiences and competencies developed, promoting a self-knowledge of the Specialist Nurse.
