Abstract

The health sector has reached a critical point, at a time when burnout and dissatisfaction with the work-life balance of healthcare professionals are on the rise. The lives of healthcare professionals are filled with emotions, highs, and lows, often being subordinated to the need for a balance between work and personal life, leading to emotional and physical exhaustion. With this study, an exploratory assessment of the level of burnout in professionals of the Portuguese National Health Service (SNS) is intended, aiming to identify the consequences on patient care and safety provided by these professionals. To achieve this objective, a survey consisting of a set of sociodemographic questions was used. For the assessment of burnout, the Maslach Burnout Inventory was employed, and for the evaluation of patient safety, the HSOPSC scale translated into portuguese was used. To assess the work-life balance, a work-life balance scale was utilized. This survey was distributed to healthcare assistants, nurses, and doctors in a sample of professionals from all geographical areas of the country. The results obtained indicate a higher incidence of burnout in the medical profession, particularly among professionals with rotating schedules. Desensitization increases with years of service, emotional exhaustion is directly related to the work-life balance, and personal accomplishment has an inverse relationship.
