The main objective of this study was to examine the influence of the socio-economic status, social support, and competencies in the subjective well-being of the elderly. We analyze the relational is between these variables, which are considered by literature to be responsible for the well-being of the individual. The sample included 70 elderly patients of the Santa Casa da Misericordia of Vila Verde. This quantitative study had a descriptive, correlational, and transversal orientation. A socio-demographic questionnaire was used, as well as five scales. The Satisfaction Scale with Social Support (SSSS), Index of Barthel (IB) and the Index of Lawton (IL) evaluated the competencies of daily living, and the subjective well-being was evaluated through the implementation of the Personal Well-being Index and Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS). Within the presented factors, the main results reveal only an existence of a marginally significant relationship between social support and the subjective well-being of the elderly on a cognitive level. For the emotional component of well-being, the positive affects predominated the negative affects. Comparatively, from all the remaining variables in study (age, gender, marital status, literary qualifications, pension, inhabitancy, existence of children, family contact, composition of the household), only the family contact variable expressed a significant correlation with the subjective well-being of the elderly.
