: innovative means for healthcare institutions management

Abstract

The use of Technology for supporting functions inside a company has been increasing in different economy sectors around the world and healthcare is in line with this phenomenon. Information system is a tool currently used in healthcare institutions, for integrating, standardising and controlling processes, resources and work. However, its incorporation requires changes inside the institutions, related to processes integration, staff adaptation of the technology in its functions, etc. In addition, the complexity of healthcare institutions due to the number of diverse and independent processes managed implies a special view and different approach of this technological implementation. Data virtualization is still at its beginning. That is why; this dissertation pretends to study a case of information system implementation in a Colombian healthcare institution, to identify the main obstacles and benefits existing during and after the technological implementation, through information collected from interviews and surveys, to know the opinion, perception and expectation of users about the information system incorporation at the clinic. Users of the system as well as leaders, who participated in the technological implementation process, were included in this study and the main findings are oriented to a general positive perception of the system’s performance, where the use of a unified data base and the integration of the work done in different areas become determining benefits for the respondents while change resistance and lack of technical and functional knowledge of the system, led by weak planning strategies, were perceived as their most important concerns.
