Abstract

This internship report addresses the integration between theory and practice in the context of product development and innovation at Bettery LifeLab, a pioneering company in the plant based dietary supplements sector. Conducted at Bettery S.A., this internship was designed as part of the requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Biotechnology and Innovation from the Escola Superior de Biotecnologia at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa. Under the supervision of Professor Rodrigo Abreu in the business context and with guidance from Professor Ana Maria Gomes, the internship focused on the development of innovative products aimed at meeting the specific nutritional needs of athletes and physically active individuals. During the internship, an innovative product, a Ready to Drink protein supplement, was developed. Although it was not launched on the market during the internship period, it went through various stages of development, including market analysis, ingredient research, and formulation, to meet the specific nutritional needs of the target audience. The product was designed to provide a convenient and effective solution with practical and easy-to-transport packaging. The report is divided into five main parts. Initially, the structure of the report is presented, followed by a comprehensive theoretical framework on foods and dietary supplements for athletes and active individuals, discussing aspects such as their definition, categorization, legislation, and the importance of nutritional supplementation in optimizing sports performance and recovery, as well as market analysis. This is followed by a detailed description of the internship, including the presentation of the company, general and specific objectives, the structure of the internship report, and the activities developed. The fourth part is dedicated to the discussion of the results achieved, emphasizing the application of studied theories in the development of new products, as well as the challenges faced and the solutions found. The conclusions section reflects on the impact of the activities developed during the internship on the intern's professional training and suggests directions for future research. The internship at Bettery S.A. provided valuable practical experience, highlighting how theory can be applied in product innovation and development in the sports nutrition sector. Regulatory challenges, market demands, and the integration of theoretical knowledge with research and development practices culminated in the development of products that not only respond to market trends and consumer needs but also contribute to scientific and technological advancement in the field of biotechnology and innovation.
