Introduction: It is often described in literature compassion as an indication of the quality of care, and is extremely important in the health care area, more specifically in the practice of excellent palliative care. This dissertation, review aims to identify the assessment tools of compassion, available in the context of palliative care and describe the psychometric characteristics of the assessment tools identified. Methodology: Systematic Review of Literature, a Scoping review. A search was carried out in the PubMed, CINAHL, MedicLatina, Scopus, Web of Science and PsycARTICLES computerized databases on March 9, 2022, with the following main keywords: questionnaires and surveys; questionnaires; instrument by type; scales; surveys; measurement; tool use; screening; screening tests; empathy; compassion; palliative care; terminally ill; hospice care; terminal care; palliative medicine; hospice and palliative care nursing. Results: At the end of the search, 1371 were identified, only 5 fulfilled the inclusion policy. Of the five articles selected, only one article comprised the original development of the scale, the other four comprised studies in the scope of palliative care, where the scales were used. It was possible to obtain the original articles, where the scales were developed. Therefore, five instruments for assessing compassion in palliative care were identified: Patient Assessment of Physician Compassion; The Sinclair Compassion Questionnaire; Compassion from Others Scale; Santa Clara Brief Compassion Scale; Compassion Scale. Conclusion: The assessment tools developed in palliative care are scarce. Of these, few are validated for Portuguese. Despite the consensus that compassion is essential for excellent palliative care, the literature on these two topics together is still scarce.
