Abstract

Bullying in school context has proven to be a public health problem, whereby among the several risk factors that are at the origin of bullying situations, the vulnerabilities associated with socioemotional skills (Lines, 2008), namely self-concept and empathy. In this sense, within the scope of the ACT – Aprender Com Todos, this study aims to characterise bullying and explore its relationship with self-concept and empathy among a sample of adolescents from the 3rd cycle attending a TEIP (Território Educativo de Intervenção Prioritária) school. Four instruments were used for this purpose: i) Sociodemographic Questionnaire; ii) Questionnaire on Bullying Behaviors; iii) Basic Empathy Scale; and iv) Piers-Harris Selfconcept Scale to a sample of 107 young people from the 3rd cycle. Among the results obtained, we highlight the significant negative correlation between victimization and self-concept, the lack of association between empathy and bullying, as well as the significant differences between victimization and bullying behaviors according to gender. The results are discussed in the light of the psychology of justice and deviant behavior, seeking to reflect on good practices in order to prevent bullying.
