Abstract

Introduction: Palliative Care (PC) seeks prevention and intervention in suffering, finding biopsychosocial and spiritual responses. Compassionate communities have come to fill this compassionate care from the community as health care is often insufficient to meet all the needs of end-of-life patients and their caregivers. Considering that the central objective of PC is to reduce the suffering of patients and their families, community intervention can improve the response to the needs of patients and caregivers, improve bonding and social support and, therefore, also improve the end-of-life experience and the health care provided and also satisfaction of professionals and discharge of them and caregivers. It is urgent to take care with more compassion and for that it is necessary to inform and raise awareness among the population, including with the objective of greater effectiveness and lower health costs. Methodology: Scoping review, with the aim of mapping knowledge about community intervention to make cities and end-of-life care more compassionate. The search was carried out in November 2021 in international databases. Results were analyzed by two independent reviewers. Results: From a total of 2287 articles, 19 articles were included in the review. The results suggest a growing interest in community intervention and the compassionate cities (CC) movement. A large movement of community interventions with volunteers, information to the general population about PC, awareness of the community and health professionals, an attempt to make protocols and even studies in an attempt to demonstrate the effectiveness of these CC. Of these articles, in addition to these intervention articles, there are also two systematic reviews that already demonstrate the concern to understand the evolution of this movement. Although there is a lack of evidence in the area of effectiveness and satisfaction, what is certain is that these articles have already shown very favorable results from this movement and that is why it is currently being disseminated throughout the world, with the countries with the highest number of studies being England and the United States, with rural areas being the most prone and most benefiting from this intervention. Conclusions: Community intervention to make cities and end-of-life care more compassionate are fundamental in PC and in their integration into the community. The results open new perspectives for research, intervention and integration of the community and professionals in this area in end-of-life care and thus improve this experience.
