Abstract

The following clerkship report represents the process of the endured personal and professional transformation. Its aim is to describe my journey and all the learning experiences and skills acquired in the form of a critical assessment. It is based on the common skills of a specialist nurse and the special skills involved in caring for the critically-ill and the goals defined by the Healthcare Sciences Institute (Instituto de Ciências da Saúde) of the Catholic University of Lisbon (Universidade Católica Portuguesa) for the Master’s degree in Nursing and specialist degree in medicalsurgical nursing. The first clerkship underwent in a Respiratory Intensive Care Unit on a central hospital in Lisbon and the goals for this clerkship were based in three different areas: prevention of healthcareassociated infection, mechanical ventilation and renal replacement therapy. For each one of these areas a personalized care plan was developed, pertaining to a patient with diagnoses related to each of the aforementioned areas. The second clerkship underwent in an Emergency Room in a hospital on the main Lisbon area and the main focus of this clerkship was the development of the skills required to approach a patient in critical condition requiring emergent care or resuscitation. A poster was developed, entitled "Dynamics of an emergency room nursing team in the context of resuscitation". The third clerkship occurred on a General Intensive Care Unit on a central hospital in Lisbon and in this clerkship the theme "thirst in the ICU" was approached, with the development of a scoping review to assess the potential interventions aiming to alleviate thirst on the critically-ill patients. With the goal of developing skills specific to the pursued area of specialization, to be able to provide the best and most evidence-based care to the critically-ill patient, a thorough literature review was conducted during the acquisition of the degree, complemented with continued education and attendance in scientific meetings.
