Pain is one of the main causes of human suffering, compromising people's quality of life, interfering with their physical and psychosocial well-being. For the Portuguese Association for the Study of Pain (2018), pain is a unpleasant and multidimensional experience, involving not only a sensory component, but also an emotional component, which is associated with concrete or potential tissue damage In other words, pain is not just a sensation, but a complex phenomenon that involves emotions and related elements, and should be seen as a biopsychosocial model. Nurse’s play a fundamental role in monitoring and, consequently, in controlling pain. The course of the internships allowed the development of technical, scientific, ethical and relational skills in the provision of care to the person in a critical situation and his family in intensive care, as well as contributing to the improvement of the quality of care provided to the person in a critical situation within the scope of pain control through non pharmacological measures. Fonseca, Lopes and Ramos (2013), claim that the use of pharmacological strategies is another way to relieve pain, however, they add that the isolated use of pharmacological resources is proved to be insufficient, so non-pharmacological measures constituted an important resource in the mitigation of pain, mainly when combined with the therapeutic regimen. Silva, Martins and Jardim’s study (2016) prove that pharmacological and non-pharmacological measures complement each other in pain relief and control.
