Abstract

Reading is, undoubtedly, one of the most difficult tasks that each child will perform in their academic life. The performance in this task will influence the way it deals with the world. Thus, children with reading difficulties will create visible constraints throughout life, which will decrease its future prospects. This research had several goals as: 1) explore the applicability and usefulness of various procedures, using the assessment based on the ABC curriculum, which was then confirmed using the corresponding literature; 2) prepare a working instrument that assessed the reading fluency (speed, correction and understanding) at the end of second and forth years and 3) identify reading difficulties of students. Based on these objectives, we sought to further verify the main variables under study: the speed at VL reading (words read correctly per minute PC), the correction in the CL reading (percentage of correctly read words) and typing errors. Thus, when performing this assessment, the teacher will identify more easily the difficulties of the students to help to overcome them. A questionnaire was also applied to the teacher, students and parents to correlate with reading fluency and reading behaviours. After data processing, the main findings in the study sample, suggest that fluency reader will directly influence the understanding of texts and is dependent on school performance; good students have better reading speed, better correction and have fewer spelling mistakes and in turn students with difficulties have lower speed, lower correction and present more spelling errors; parents of good students have more education and better reading skills, promote earlier contact of the children with books and stories and are more involved in their children school life. In reflection mode, we can state that conduct timely reviews on the development of reading skills will help identify problems to be able to intervene early and successfully.
