Abstract

Gender inequality is a reality in the workplace. In the case of youth sports coaches in Portugal, they face additional challenges compared to other professionals due to inadequate working conditions and a sports culture that limits their leadership roles and professional recognition. This exploratory and qualitative study analyzed perceptions of leadership and working conditions among female coaches in youth sports settings. Seventeen individual interviews were conducted using a semi-structured guide, with data analyzed through NVivo 12, emphasizing axial coding. The results highlight the need for supportive measures to address the challenges faced by female coaches, promoting equitable working conditions and an inclusive organizational culture. The lack of female representation and the amateur nature of sports limit the progression of these coaches, who emphasize the need for greater public recognition and financial compensation to ensure full dedication to their profession and skills improvement. This study is innovative in addressing the gap in the literature on female leadership among youth sports coaches in Portugal, underscoring the importance of equal working conditions to enhance the effectiveness and recognition of female leadership in sports.
