This dissertation is focused on identifying leadership and communication skills of leaders working in professional road cycling in Portugal. Initially, a theoretical basis was developed in the field of leadership in elite sports – focusing on coaches as leaders, types of leadership and coaches' skills – as well as the communication and relationship established between coaches and athletes. Methodologically, the research was qualitative, using six semi-structured interviews – the President of the Portuguese Cycling Federation, the Director of the Volta a Portugal, the General and Sports Director of Efapel Cycling and also three of his cyclists. The personal testimony of each of the above-mentioned interviewees was essential to meet the objectives set, so in presenting and discussing the results it was possible to identify the leadership practices and communication skills of these leaders in areassuch as emotional intelligence, self-awareness, reaction to adversity, vision, objectives, active listening and versatility when communicating with different publics.
