Abstract

The present study aims at understanding how leaders can enhance the development of creativity within their team members, embedded in an organizational context. To do so we support our theory on the concepts of leadership and creativity. The leadership concept approach and its evolution are focused on Goleman’s Emotional leadership theory. As for creativity, we begin through an overall approach moving towards the specific creativity as a process and conceived as an every-day activity, directly linked to Amabile’s theorizations. The development of our study is based on Componential Theory of Creativity which suggests that the most susceptible element of creativity on which the leader can act upon is the intrinsic motivation. Therefore we proposed ourselves to identify the elements and leadership aspects that can drive intrinsic motivation as a facilitator for creativity. The empiric work is again focused, in the defined elements and leadership aspects, testing them through semi-directed interviews and inquiries. The last ones, however a quantitative methodology, are dealt in a qualitative perspective, in an interpretivism approach. The main outcome of our study suggests that emotional leadership, based on three elements- Autonomy, Perceived Leader Support and Purpose - drives intrinsic motivation and, consequently, creativity.
