The nurse's intervention in the community has, among others, the purpose of promoting healthy lifestyles, health literacy, and contributing to health-promoting and disease-preventive environments. Population ageing is a reality throughout Europe, and, in Portugal, it is associated with fewer healthy life years, making it essential to invest in health policies that promote active and healthy ageing. The elderly population is a risk group for accidents and aggravation of diseases that lead to the need for first aid. They are the most frequent witnesses of emergency situations and have less knowledge in first aid and less access to training. During the internship, carried out at the Arnaldo Sampaio Public Health Unit, the intervention project "First Aid Literacy: Empowering the senior community to act" was developed, based on the health planning methodology. The main theoretical framework that supported it was Nola Pender's Health Promotion Model. All phases of the planning process counted on the active participation of the target group, and a diagnosis of the situation was made, from which the deficit of knowledge in first aid and compromised self-efficacy emerged as priority problems. The general objective was defined as to contribute to the training of the senior citizens group to adequately intervene in first aid and basic life support situations, during the period from 5 September to 16 December 2022. Specific objectives were defined, with targets and indicators. The educational strategy and the establishment of community partnerships were used, and numerous activities were carried out, including health education sessions, the construction of an e-book and the dissemination of the project in the community and in the USPAS team, promoting its continuity. The evaluation results are positive, the proposed goals were achieved and there was a clear improvement in the group's knowledge and promotion of self-efficacy in the face of a situation requiring first aid. The internship allowed the development of competencies as a nurse specialist in Community Nursing and Public Health and as a Master's student.
