Abstract

The following internship report was written in the scope of the Mestrado em Ensino de Música (Master’s in Music Teaching), at Universidade Católica do Porto, which grants professional status for teaching Musical Instrument, M11 recruitment group (Guitar) and Ensemble Music, recruitment group M32. The work is presented in two parts. The first part contains a detailed report of the internship. Within it, there are descriptions of the institution which received the graduate student (Conservatório Regional de Ponta Delgada), as well as of the surrounding environment and the students with whom the graduate student worked throughout the internship, under the guidance of his supervising tutors. The whole section places a strong emphasis on reflection. Through comparing the developed field work, and the conducted bibliographic research, it aims to reach an understanding of the role of a teacher in current times. The second part is dedicated to the description and scientific validation of the Pedagogic Intervention Project. This project dealt with finding an effective approach to teaching musical reading to elementary level guitar students, who had their first experience with the instrument in that school year, by forming a connection between colors and notes written on the staff, and where they could be found on the guitar. The project was developed with four students of the aforementioned institution, taking the format of a case study. The research points towards optimistic results, but also proved to be a starting point for future work.
