The present investigation had the main objective of understanding the most appropriate budgeting methodology for a company in the logistics and transportation sector, alongside its main advantages. The analysis began with the collection of the main budgeting methodologies, focusing essentially on their concepts, main advantages and disadvantages. This theoretical analysis served as the basis for the practical application in the company which is the object of study. In order to comply with the goals of this study, a case study methodology was used, where the budgeting process for 2016 and 2017 of a Portuguese corporate group on the logistics and transportation sector was analysed, resorting to the direct analysis of events, to the analysis of internal processes and to interviews. Both budgeting processes were built using different methodologies, being these critically analysed and compared with the literature, with the goal of understanding which methodology is the most adequate and which are their major strong and weak points. Finally, some improvements opportunities were pointed out in order to improve the process currently adopted by the organization. Results show that the alterations made on the budgeting process from 2016 to 2017 were, in fact, positive, achieving some improvements on the duration of this process, as well as on the level of detail and accuracy of the information produced. The budgeting method that shows to be the most adequate is similar to the bottom-up methodology. However, there is still some space to improvements, essentially on the amount of time spent with the budgeting process and with deadline accomplishments throughout this process.
