Although cultural mapping has become a recurrent and paradigmatic practice for portraying the Cultural and Creative Sector (CCS) both nationally and internationally, except for some long-running projects, most are non-systematic events that, therefore, fail to understand in depth a diverse and dynamic ecosystem. Now if one considers the CCS in Portuguese territory, it reveals that it is an immaculate landscape from the point of view of the scarcity of detailed research, subdued by unfounded agitation. Much is yet to be studied in the CCS, so one has explored through the incisive and detailed concentration in the performing arts sector in the city of Oporto. The importance of the sector is now unanimously accepted, however the sustainability of the performing arts is challenged by its agents, a recurring topic in the political agendas and is considered one of the most difficult sectors to observe (DCMS, 2016, p.19; KEA, 2006, p.185). In addition to observing the symptoms, how can we also understand their foundation? This was the challenge of this investigation. The objective was to make the cultural mapping of the performing arts sector in the city of Oporto and analyze its socio-economic impact. Throughout the investigation, one was able to perceive the broad and heterogenous dimension of the object of study: in terms of definition and delimitation of concepts (culture, CCS, performing arts and cultural mapping) that are constantly evolving and the diversity of proposals of statistical analysis and data collection. Taking this as a starting point, one naturally needed to use a complex methodology meant to understand authors, concepts, methods and sources of information, and which, therefore, required the diversified collaboration of contributions and collaborators. Thus, our aim is that this research may open up new perspectives and perceptions of the performing arts sector by leveraging the means and powers of cultural mapping as a research practice, as well as leading to awareness, participation and community involvement.
