Abstract

The Health Care-Associated Infections assumes an increasing importance in Portugal and in the World. Understand how the chiefs nurses manage the risk related to the Health Care-Associated Infections in clinical practice of finalist nursing students are the main question in this study. The student’s opinion of guidance assessment in infection control during clinical practice appears as a complementation of this study.
An exploratory study seems to be the more appropriated tool to approach this investigation. The interview and a questioner was the methodology adopted, where 4 chief nurses of Intensive Care Unit were interviewed and 227 second semester, 4th year students of the Bachelor in nursing answered a questioner.
The qualitative data treatment was performed by content analysis and statistical tests were applied to the quantitative data.
This study reveal that chief nurses identify the risk supported in scientific knowledge, however don’t have resources to assess objectively their services and to implement a risk management plan defining priorities to the strategic action in a regular basis. The student’s questioner analysis reinforces the collected information with the chief nurses in 3 features: the necessity to improve the school-services cooperation, reducing the guidance difficulties; the importance of professional clinical practice models in the acquisition of work competencies in infection control; the environmental importance as infection source.
The lack of resources don’t allowed the investigation expand to the service guides and teachers. They have an important role to the problematic in study as well as the chief nurses and the students.
In the future this work could be performed in cooperation between nursing schools and health institutions.
