In mediated societies, Web 2.0 has enabled the emergence of new patterns of communication and political participation. The internet has enabled the shift of media to digital platforms, and thus exceeded the limits of traditional media, creating new audiences, new content, new forms of participation and new perspectives on the democratic debate. This study aims to understand how communities of online news media in Portugal commented political issues. In this regard, the study focuses on the comments to the Single Social Tax (TSU) in order to determine how it is that the subject is discussed, that communicative flows are generated between the participants and whether such participation shall respect the principles of the debate democratic. The analysis of the Terms and Conditions of participation and comments from online communities of the Daily News, Express, TSF and SIC allowed to understand that the users of these platforms do not manifest themselves according to democratic standards, the majority of comments and debates are not argued or tolerant.
