Abstract

The business environment is increasingly dynamic, demanding and competitive, therefore requiring a constant improvement of the activities, namely the logistic ones, within both the industrial and the service providers sectors.
This paper is focused on the logistics activities of Parfois, specifically the ones performed on the company’s consumables warehouse in Rio Tinto. The fast and continuous growth of the brand created several new challenges for the organization, storage and the overall management of this type of goods.
Literature suggests that Lean Thinking, and its recommended tools, can help to reduce several existing wastes and improve the efficiency and fluidity of the operations.
This paper attempts to understand in what way these Lean tools can help to improve the logistic operations in a fast-fashion retail business.
After the implementation of solutions based on the Kanban, the 5s, the visual management, the standard work and even on the ABC analysis methodologies, several improvements were recorded on the company’s logistic operations. In addition, the tasks performed by both the warehouse workers and their intermediate and top management, became simpler, faster and more productive.
In order to develop these solutions and the respective future efficiency improvement proposals, following and observing all the procedures related with consumables, since origin until shipping, was key. It was also crucial to conduct several informal interviews with the different parties engaged in these operations.
