Abstract

This article aims to examine the most recent phenomenon of meme stocks - in particular, the case of GameStop Corporation, which has been ongoing since early 2021 - and its suitability to the current legal and social paradigm. Subsequently, the goals of capital markets regulation and the Efficient Capital Markets Hypothesis are introduced, from which it is inferred that the very market dynamics and processes tend to increase the efficiency of the latter.Following this, we discuss the regulation and functioning dynamics of the capital markets in light of the behavior of the brokerage firm Robinhood Financial LLC and the Securities and Exchange Commission under the circumstances.
