Abstract

Menopause is an important and normal development process in a woman's life and perceived as a time of change in emotional and physical health. The present study aimed to analyze the relationship between body image, depression and marital satisfaction and the impact of these variables on sexual satisfaction. This is a cross-sectional, descriptive, correlational and analytical study with a single moment of collection, consisting of 61 female participants, including premenopausal and postmenopausal women. The instruments used were the sociodemographic questionnaire, the Body Shape Questionnaire, the Anxiety Scale, Depression and Stress, the Scale of Satisfaction Assessment in Areas of Conjugal Life, and also the Reduced Sexual Satisfaction Scale. The results reveal that sexual satisfaction is higher in women who are not menopausal. Statistically significant negative correlations were found between sexual satisfaction and concern with body image, anxiety, depression and stress, i.e.,higher levels of these variables imply lower sexual satisfaction. Significant positive correlations were found between sexual satisfaction and marital satisfaction, i.e., marital satisfaction in all dimensions, is associated with greater sexual satisfaction. Two subscales of marital satisfaction(social network/extrafamily relationships and sexuality) were positive predictors of sexual satisfaction and, the concern with body image, depression were predictors of lower sexual satisfaction. With the results of the present study, we intend to assist in the development of future programs to prevent and promote sexual satisfaction of menopausal women.
