Piano methods for beginners are devices which most of piano teachers use on their practices and the current availability of methods is very wide. The aim of this study consisted on a research for guidelines to create a new piano method for initiation, to elementary school age students, in Portuguese and with traditional repertoire of children’s universe, which meets the current needs of piano teachers who teach in Portuguese music schools. Methodologically, I researched appropriate practices for piano initiation on literature, I performed a questionnaire with piano teachers in order to discover characteristics of their teaching practices, piano methods most appreciated aspects and the most efficient methods on their opinion. The questionnaire results were subject to a quantitative study, which lead to the respective analysis and discussion of results. A comparative study was also carried out with the most quoted methods, with the results being drawn up on a detailed table according to categories and sub-categories / methods. The study's findings point to the possibility of establishing guidelines for a new piano initiation method formulation, with aforementioned requirements.
