Abstract

The career adaptation model alludes to ways in which career transitions are managed. As practicing sports involves several challenges, the career adaptation model can be useful to support practices in the moments of transition experienced by athletes. Based on this model, the present study aims to analyze whether emotional skills and career adaptability contribute to explain the vocational certainty of student-athletes attending the 12th grade, controlling the effects of gender and time spent practicing sports. Participants included 121 student-athletes (Mage = 17.56, SD = 0.94) who responded to a sociodemographic, academic and sports characterization questionnaire, the Emotional Competence Questionnaire, the Adaptability Scale and the Vocational Certainty Scale. Correlational results suggest statistically significant positive relationships between emotional skills, career adaptability and vocational certainty. A statically significant positive relationship was found between career adaptability and weekly frequency of sports practice. Using the multivariate analysis of variance, it was verified that males present higher average scores of emotional skills and career adaptability than females. The results of the hierarchical linear regression analysis indicate that emotional competencies contribute, in a statistically significant way, to explain variations in vocational certainty. Future studies could investigate the role of parents and coaches in the covered constructs. It would be important to implement psychological practices with student-athletes, sports and educational agents to support young people in developing emotional skills and career adaptability, in managing dual careers and in their choices.
