Abstract

The ecclesiastical archives are of great significance in the context of the Church’s cultural heritage. So it is with the Diocesan Archive of Bragança-Miranda – Tombo Diocesano Monsenhor José de Castro, which serve as a valuable documentary repository for this ecclesiastical department. The purpose of the Tombo Diocesano Monsenhor José de Castro project, co-financed by the Northern Regional Operating Programme (Norte 2020) and by the Bragança City Council, is to preserve and enhance the value of the cultural heritage of the Church in the territory of the Diocese of Bragança-Miranda, from the documentary collection contained in the Archive and the life and work of its patron. Msgr. José de Castro (1886-1966), priest, publicist, diplomat and researcher, is the author of an extensive bibliography produced from historiographic research in the Vatican Archives. The work Bragança e Miranda (Bispado) enshrined him as the “historian for the Diocese” and patron of the Diocesan Archive. The life, work and thoughts of Monsignor José de Castro are the cornerstones of the Tombo Diocesano Monsenhor José de Castro project. In order to pursue the objectives of the project, it was and is fundamental to understand the multiple facets of this leading figure of portuguese Cultural Heritage.
