Subordinated to the theme “Museums and popular culture in the 21st century”, this PhD thesis in Cultural Studies aims to map the State of the Art of the field of study of what is called popular culture, either by identifying the dominant views, either in with respect to the history and the actuality of representation as well as the communication of its expressions in anthropology (ethnography) and art museums, in order to obtain an outline of the theoretical -practical trends emerging in the first decade of the 21st century. In this context, it is dedicated to investigating the manifestation of artistic practices called popular arts and traditions in close connection with the studies of museums and heritage. For this purpose, two case studies will be presented, the Portuguese, Museum of Popular Art -MAP (Lisbon), and the French, Musée des Civilisations de l'Europe et de la Méditerranée-Mucem (Marseille). At the turn of the century, it is considered pertinent, on the one hand, to envision the future of ethnographic museums by analyzing their performance in the post-modern era in the light of the transformations that took place in the globalized, post-industrial, post-colonial and multicultural world and, on the other hand, to look for conditions for a new cultural and communicational legitimation. The transformations that have taken place since the end of the 20th century reconfigure new paradigms of lifestyles, challenging the museological institution to critical self-reflection -metamuseology, and to the analysis of recent developments in contemporary society, questioning the representation of the diversity of cultural and artistic expressions.
